Promoting the advantages of co-operatives in the global crisis
The meeting of the 8th International Co-operative Alliance Asia-Pacific (ICA-AP) Regional Assembly was held between December 1 - 6, 2008 in Hanoi, attracting the participation of 23 ICA-AP members and 18 countries from other continents. Via forums and workshops, the assembly focused on strengthening the advantages of co-operatives in the current global economic crisis.

Vietnam’s attractive retail market

In recent years the retail market in Vietnam has developed rather strongly, reaching a growth rate of over 20% and is expected to reach 25% this year. The retail turnover was about 37.5 billion USD in 2006, increased to 42.5 billion USD in 2007 and will reach 53 billion USD by 2010. On January 1, 2009, Vietnam will fully open its retail market, which will provide a great opportunity for foreign retail groups to do business in Vietnam, at the same time pose challenges to domestic businesses.

The Attraction of a Land
In 1983, pharmacist Nguyen Van Be, a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University and Vice Director of Phytopharco Company, decided to work in Dong Thap Muoi in southern Vietnam. Here, he and his colleagues have spent 16 years digging over 100km of canals and arroyos and building up dams to preserve water on an area of 1,041ha in Binh Phong Thanh Commune, Moc Hoa District, Long An Province and established Dong Thap Muoi Medicinal Herbs Research, Preservation and Development Centre in 1999. It is now an eco-tourist convalescence and disease treatment area.
