According to Doctor Le Thi Minh Ly, Deputy Director of
Cultural Heritage Department, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism,
Vietnamese Quan ho (love duet singing) from Bac Ninh Province has been
recognized by UNESCO as a World's Intangible Cultural Heritage. The decision was
made at the 4th session of UNESCO's Inter-Governmental Committee for
Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritages, held in Abu Dhabi, capital of the
United Arab Emirates, from September 28th to October 2nd, 2009.
Mrs. Ly said that there were 111 nominations from 34
countries filed for UNESCO's recognition this year. After three rounds of strict
assessments, only 76 ones have been approved, including Vietnamese Quan
ho.
UNESCO has acknowledged the special cultural value,
social customs as well as the artistic performance, singing technique, cultural
manner, language and attire of the Quan
ho from Bac Ninh.
So far, Vietnam has three World's Intangible Cultural
Heritages approved by UNESCO, including Hue court music, Tay Nguyen (Central
Highlands) gongs and Quan ho from Bac Ninh.
