| On the morning of June 6, 2010 the 19th World Economic Forum on East Asia, co-organised by
the Vietnamese Government and the WEF was officially opened in Ho Chi Minh
City.
The two-day forum attracted
450 delegates including high-ranking government officials in the region, world
leading entrepreneurs and international scholars and correspondents. Among the
delegates who attended the forum were Prime Ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos
and Myanmar, high-ranking officials from China, Japan and Thailand, the ASEAN
General Secretary, WTO Director General, Deputy General Secretary of the
Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Ministers of
Economics from some countries in the region and high-ranking officials of
regional and international financial and monetary organizations, such as the
Asian Development Bank (ADB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Under the theme “Rethinking Asia’s Leadership Agenda” the World
Economic Forum on East Asia 2010 included nearly 20 sessions including five
plenary and over 10 discussion sessions, which focused on four principal
contents, i.e. Asia’s rising role, global risks, green growth programmes and
future growth programmes. At the press conference, international delegates
emphasized that Vietnam has obtained outstanding
achievements in hunger eradication and poverty reduction. There must be
strategies in the coming time to continue development, minimize trade barriers
and co-develop to create a general strength. The 19th forum will be an important exchange and an issue
of concern for related organizations. After 19 years, the forum attracted the
greatest number of participants, reflecting the fact that Asian countries are
advancing after the economic crisis.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the WEF on East Asia 2010,
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that with rapid economic development
East Asia has an ever-greater impact and
therefore it has opportunities to actively participate in international
co-operation mechanism. The global role of
East Asia has been
reflected via its member countries at such organizations as the United Nations,
G.20, WTO, etc. Particularly with four members and ASEAN representative at G.20,
East Asia is able to make a positive and remarkable contribution to creating a
new, more effective and democratic structure of global governance. The
Vietnamese Prime Minister hoped that the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2010
would set forth a lot of ideas, creating a new incentive for a sustainable
development throughout the region.
